  2. Anti-inflammatory Medications that reduce or eliminate inflammation in the bronchi.
    These come in:
    • MDI
    • Liquid for use with respiratory therapy machine
    • Tablets
    • Injections
    Examples: Cromolyn or Intal and Corticosteroids

How to prevent episodes?

  1. The doctor and patient should begin by looking for the factor that caused the asthma episode
  2. The patient should keep a journal of their reactions to dust, food, animals, weather, etc.. Skin tests sometimes help identify substances that may be causing a reaction
  3. Once you identify the triggers of their asthma episodes should avoid
    • Try to avoid breathing vapor cleaners, paints and liquid bleach
    • Avoid personal products such as deodorant sprays, perfumes, hair sprays, cosmetics talc and fragrance
    • Avoid loose powder homemade effects when used as curtains and upholstered furniture
    • Regularly clean dust around and where to accumulate. Use a damp cloth
    • Use damp mop instead of a broom to sweep
    • Keep clean air conditioners like the fans
    • Avoid carpets, curtains and other items to decorate the room
    • Do not smoke and avoid being around smokers
    • Avoid plants pollen. Try to avoid, insofar as possible, leaving home at noon or in the afternoon
    • Avoid animals that cause reactions
    • Wash clothing weekly
    • Keep the house clean
    • Cover mattress and pillows with a plastic cover
    • Clean wet areas (bathrooms, kitchen and basement) with a liquid bleach to remove mold
    • Avoid foods that cause reactions such as milk, eggs, shellfish, nuts or chocolates
    • Avoid strenuous exercise, do so in moderation. If the air is warm and moist can increase your exercise pace. At the first sign of "dick" or difficulty breathing stop immediately and rest
    • Avoid exercise in cold dry air
    • Stay away from people who are suffering from a cold or other respiratory diseases
    • If nervous tension and stress will cause asthma episodes, try to avoid
    • Ask your doctor about using meter peak flow breathing air "peak flow" as a measure to prevent asthma episodes
    • Many times you need to take medication to prevent asthma episodes. These should be administered as directed by the physician
